Ransom Notes Covered in NY Times

The New York Times has a great piece this morning covering the Ransom Notes campaign. There are quotes from myself, Kristina Chew and Susan Etlinger. Please head on over, read and share. And thank you to Kristina and Susan for being such amazing partners in advocacy. These women rule.

As Kristina notes this morning, Dr. Harold S. Koplewicz, the head of the NYU study center emphasizes that while the campaign may seem “harsh and upsetting,” its goal lay in the provocation. And that, my friends, indicates that he’s still missing the boat. “Nothing about us without us,” proclaims the flagship statement of the disability rights movement. Koplewicz maintains that parents were involved in the ad campaign, and he muses on the “hurt feelings” that seem to be emerging from parents of (and adults with) autism. If he were to read the comments in the online petition–which as of this morning has generated over 400 signatures–it would be obvious that to call this reaction hurt feelings is a red herring.

These are the voices of advocacy, and I am proud to be a part.
