Niksmom tagged me yesterday with the following meme (which I finally understand from her post is short for “me-me”–makes perfect sense and how very dense of me not to have understood before):

The rules:
1. Let others know who tagged you.
2. Players start with 8 random facts about themselves.
3. Those who are tagged should post these rules and their 8 random facts.
4. Players should tag 8 other people and notify them they have been tagged.

Having already fulfilled #1, here I go to #2:

a. I’ve been blogging since September, 2003, which might explain why I seem to have run out of things to say;

b. Like Niksmom, I also attended Quaker school when I was young. I attribute this upbringing to my activism, optimism, pacifism and all around -isms. My schooling also made me unwilling to settle, and, finally, contributed to my desire to help others;

c. I have a tattoo. It’s private. Don’t ask;

d. At one point in my life I knew ancient Greek, Latin and French. I scored higher on my Latin AP test than I did in English. Go figure. I still have Greek texts on my bookshelf. Occasionally I take them out to study the notes I took as a teenager in them. I still speak French;

e. People often misspell both my names, adding “e’s” and “y’s” where they don’t belong;

f. I have a huge “salt tooth.” I could easily handle a salt lick. Or so I tell myself;

g. I love to drive. Love it. Love love love to drive. Ask me to pick you up. I will.

h. I’m prompt. Very prompt.

On to my tags. Forgive me if you’re already been picked:

1. Susan Ito at Reading Writing Living. I’ve been wanting to know eight fun details about the delightful Susan for a while. Here’s my chance to ask!

2. Jonathan at Nelliphant II. Jonathan is one of the most erudite people I know. I’d like to start with “What’s the Nelliphant for?”

3. Lisa A. from Dissent, The Blog. I think Lisa might be on vacation at the moment, but when she returns, I expect some juicy stuff. In the meantime, don’t forget Lisa’s incredible book project.

4. Another Vicki, this one Knitorious. I’d listen to V. talk about knitting, skies, flowers, yarn shops. You name it.

5. Danielle at 6YearMed. There’s so much I’d like to know about her, such as how she decided to go to med school, what makes her so funny, and, well, don’t even get Danielle started on the female body. She’s downright poetic when describing her OB/GYN rotation. Who knew?

6. Susan from The Family Room. She’s a renaissance woman, Miss E. with a renaissance blog. I’d like to know if she likes to cook, for example, and shoot, anything else she’d want to offer.

7. Caroline, who offers up Food For Thought. I met Caroline through Literary Mama and come to find out she is one literary mama.

8. Finally, my all time favorite editor, Marjorie. She’s got her mom brain on and it’s lovely.

    Yippee! Yes, you *are* prompt! That was a fast turn around. So, on the tattoo…did it hurt?

    I won’t tag other people, as it goes against my sense of propriety. But, here are some answers to questions which themselves may not make sense.

    1. Let others know who tagged you.

    Vicki Forman Kamiya tagged me!

    2. Players start with 8 random facts about themselves.

    a. Nelliphant comes from the contraction of “An elephant.” My license plate is NLIPHNT.

    b. As a child, I was made to study violin. I was dubbed the Jack Benny of Queensborough Community College. (For those who weren’t listening to radio in the Dark Ages, Jack Benny was a comedian and radio host known for two things: his compulsive stinginess and his pronounced inability to measure up to his idol, Jascha Heifetz.)

    c. I have exactly 1,889 books. (Thanks, LibraryThing!

    d. I used to be a world-famous graduate student. (Andrzej Warminski still greets me as “the famous Jonathan Cohen.”)

    e. I am still a virgin, sine macula.

    f. I once received a prize from Yale for “good moral character.”

    g. As a child, I was taught numerous techniques for repelling Christian missionaries.

    h. When I was six, I had an IQ of 180. However, my physical age has more than caught up with my mental age… :-)

    I once knew Ancient Greek pretty well, too but, alas, it’s rusted away.

    Good answers!

    The best thing I’ve ever read about the loss of languages you once had was in Randall Jarrell’s Pictures from an Institution. He was satirizing one of the fifties’ Great Books type, and said that “his Greek must have worn away like shark’s teeth, from overuse.”
