Anything without purpose

is art.

Thus spoke The Girl over the weekend as we put the finishing touches on repainting her room.

To which I replied, “Some things with purpose are also art, like wrist watches.”

Several years ago, The Girl painted her walls in four different colors.  She lived with the orange, yellow, teal and blue for a long time, but last week, during spring break, it all got to be just too much.  Tuesday night found us in Lowe’s, picking out paint, and by Thursday the walls were primed and ready for the new look.  We had a wonderful time together painting, with some lovely conversations like the one that gave rise to the quote about art and purpose.

And the room?  Stunning.  One wall is a grapy-eggplant, and the other three a very pale lavender.  The effect is rather 18th century Jane Austen meets 21st century rock and roll, and it works perfectly with that pupasan chair donated by The Sitter.  Sophisticated, trendy, cool.  Just like The Girl.

In honor of art, purpose and creativity in general, head on over to a new Etsy store set up by a  friend and former student.  This friend has beautiful handmade frames and cards with unique linoprints, perfect for special notes to special someones…

The girl is so right, in a zen sort of way, but I have to argue – art is not without purpose (and, since you, too, are an artist, I guess I’m preaching to the choir).

love the beautiful title of the book. love the beautiful cover. am ready to hold it in my hands, absorb it. come toward PA to promote it. i’d love to sit down together over a glass or mug of anything.

Tell Josie the colors are stunning. What a great choice. It made me want to jump into the picture and crash in the comfy chair. Glad you had a great time together laced with meaningful conversation. If I were sitting in that chair and joining you both, I’d say all art has a purpose, but not necessarily a functional or utilitarian one. Such great observations. Lucky Mom, lucky Girl. xoxo

My girl is also itchin’ to paint her room. Four years ago, she chose a color based on it’s name (Autumn Red). When I noted that it looked more like Pepto-Bismol pink, she assured me that it would look “Autumn Red” on the walls. It didn’t, and she informed me a few weeks ago that she has hated it ever since. Time to repaint.

Sometimes the most surprising combinations often make the best results. I’ll nip over and see your ex-students work now, especially now that I’m struggling to learn about Etsy myself.

Your friend’s frames are amazing. I’m going to buy the dictator frame for my mother-in-law because she is one. I would have bought her an evil gossiping narcissist frame, but there weren’t any.
